Amber Life - Amber Life - Level

Eigentlich müsste man das Level in einigen Teilen Backtrack Life nennen ;)

[hehe]

Hi, I finished this great level on Saturday when these forums were down for unknown reasons.

Eddy, in "HMS Botany Bay", you may have encountered an alternate bug with the pushable box falling into a shaft, if it is the same box I had trouble with (but that box is on the trapdoor when you first find the box). I moved the box onto the wrong tile and that caused the game to come to a dead end in Botany Bay. The box was not supposed to be able to be moved onto that third tile. But this box can not fall in to a shaft because the trapdoor is opened by the box going onto the correct tile. George MacIver is looking into this, but you have may have found a different box problem because I can't remember if 2 boxes are moved in the Botany Bay level.

In "Secrets of the Sea", the problem with the climbable pillar at the spines is a normal cheat mistake that players should know from experience that they should not do it.

This game had one serious problem in the "Ravine" level where you could easily go upwards by jumping on a tree instead of using a Vulcan Stone to open the shortcut passage door. This may have caused you to have a Vulcan Stone in your inventory when you start the last level of the game, and you could skip part of that level. George MacIver has since prevented the ability to jump onto the tree at the lower river place, because you must use 2 Vulcan Stones in the "Ravine" level.

Again, George MacIver is currently writing a walkthrough (on his site) and making a revised download that will be available soon.

Also, there is a bonus secret count at the torch area in "Ship Graveyard" or "Secrets of the Sea" (?) in this game if you do the right things in the ship levels, but I can't remember the sequence at this time.

Inchdix's game was very enjoyable.

Not in every case. I can remember levels, where this move was unfortunately necessary. But levelbuilders can avoid this and should do this in my opinion, to avoid any misunderstandings... ;)

Eddy, you are probably right, but I have not played every level.

The "jump onto the tree branch" type move in the "Ravine" level by backflipping from the rock wall IS definitely a normal move in recent years such as "Fading Light 2" and several CaC levels, for example. This was not common when Inchdix created the original files for this game a decade ago. This is why George MacIver has since deleted this possibility over the weekend in the upcoming revised download.

Many early 2001-2003 customlevels did not think of such things, and it is possible to get into problems with some of those levels if you use the current "player's knowledge base" to play these games.

Do you mean the place with the torch puzzle where you first have to light the three bowls, then the two wall torches, after which you get the first flyby and then the last two bowls to get the second flyby for the purple rose? After getting the purple rose you could go down to get the golden one.
Then you should have 8 roses once [hmm]

Nad, there is a hidden secret bonus (count only -- not rose) in this game that Inchdix put in. It is at that place, but it depends upon how you do it and when you do it between levels. This has been confirmed by George MacIver. I can not tell you how it is done, but you get one secret count when you enter the final secret torch area room (after returning from another level) and a second secret count when you pick up the rose. I got lucky, but I did it by the intended method of lighting torches, exploration, etc. This is not a bug. Unfortunately George doesn't know the procedure himself because he did not know where it was located (since Inchdix didn't document it) so he cannot describe it. Maybe someday I will reload my many savegames and try to see if I can describe the method.

This game was reconstructed from Inchdix's wads, etc. that he left unfinished a decade ago.

I probably won't respond to any reply until later today since it is 2:30 a.m. where I am and I am going to sleep soon.

The gold rose in "Ship Graveyard" is absolutely not secret #8, because you cannot get it directly after getting the ruby rose. The 3 bowls in the outer room cannot be lit at this point of the game because the cages are still up and you cannot light the bowls through the cages except by a bug/cheat move.

The way I played (and presumably the intended method) is:

Spoiler Spoiler

"Ship Graveyard":

1. Get a torch and light it in lava room. Go light the 2 wall torches in the next room and get a flyby of the transparent wall door to the ruby secret area. Drop the torch. Get the ruby secret (secret 7). Flyby of the cages going down at the 2 bowls at the wall torches. Go back and get the torch and light those 2 bowls. Drop the torch. The cages are still up at the 3 bowls in the outer lava room. Swim to the next area of the level to get a trident and go to the next level

(You can get the silver secret of this level now before the trident area or wait until before the "HMS Botany Bay" level much later.)

2. Get the trident and jump down into the lava water hole. Go down to the bottom and get some objects. Pickup the revolver/LMP/shotgun ammo/revolver ammo and get a screenshot of an unlit bowl without a cage at the lava torch room. This is not required in this game and may be a hidden secret or the way the cages are lowered (not clear without extensive gameplay testing). You only need to jump into the hole, climb out onto the safe tile and go to the wall crevice to get to the next level -- you do not need to swim down to the bottom of that hole.

2. Go to the "Secrets of the Sea" level. Do everything and get the first 2 secret roses in the bridge area. You can get the third rose in the long water swim tunnel first or last (and even before going to the "HMS Botany Bay" level by going back).

3. Go back to the "Ship Graveyard" level and go to the torch area. Get a new torch because the first one probably disappeared due to the level changes. Light the 3 bowls in the lava room since the cages are no longer there. Get a flyby of a transparent crawlspace opening up where the ruby rose was. Drop the torch. Go to that crawlspace. The secret chime rings as you approach the crawlspace entrance (but no rose -- this is the extra secret chime). Go in the crawlspace, and go down the corner passage or the light shaft and get the gold rose. The secret chime rings again. Thus, giving 2 secret chimes for the gold rose.

4. Finish up all remaining tasks in "Ship Graveyard" or left over from "Secrets of the Sea". Go to the "HMS Botany Bay" level.

I got the golden rose just after the purple by igniting the bowls through the cages and then the wall torches in the right order.
So it works. But this not the intended way. The way you described should be mentioned for the WT

ATTENTION: This update is now available!! :)

-----

George MacIver has just released the updated version of "Amber LIfe" (v.2) which corrects many of the problems that caused dead ends, etc. The gameplay is still the same.

Anyone, who is going to start this game, should download the new version (v.2) from Skribblerz.com instead of the old version at other sites:

http://www.skribblerz.com/amberlife.html

P.S. George has also been doing a walkthrough on his forum, and it is completed through "HMS Botany Bay" at present.
